Isn't this the plug that folks used a sparkplug socket on, upside down? There was a thread on this a long while
back. The gist of it was that the upper part of some spark plug sockets is the correct size to fit the plug on the
tank. Pull the rubber thing out of the socket and put the extension in from the wrong end and it will then permit
you to use the socket in a way never intended.

Buy or borrow the correct tool. Using a hammer and chisel is not
recommended, especially on gas tanks.
