It runs!!! It started right up!
I'm still adjusting fluid levels - coolant, tranny, etc. I need to put
the hood back on. I can't find the rubber mounts for the air cleaner -
will have to get another set.
Here's the question - there's a green wire beside the coil - what does
it go to? The coil? If so, which terminal (it can reach either one)?
For those who don't remember my trials with the SLC, two and a half
years ago it got hard to start one week, then the next week would not
start at all. It tried to run a cylinder or two, but not enough to
run. I ran diagnostics on the fuel system, ignition system, checked
cam timing, compression, etc. Everything looked good.
I had noticed over the previous two years that it would 'use' coolant
and oil if I made several WOT runs. I also found in tearing down the
intake system that all of the bolts on the right bank were finger
loose. Interestingly, I also found that the head bolts on that side
are so tight that I stripped the heads on some, and broke the U wrench
for those under the cam trying to loosen them. I've only been able to
remove three of the head bolts on that side.
I bought a used engine, replaced all the rubber seals, copper seals,
gaskets, timing chain and rails, had the head and valves
checked/ground, new valve seals, etc. There a lot of rubber seals in
the intake manifold and injection systems that were hard and brittle.
They have all been replaced. I took the best parts from the two
engines, new water pump, etc., and SLOWLY re-assembled everything.
Cleaning and painting all the brackets, visible parts, etc. also took
a lot of the time.
Today was the first time I tried to start it, and it started almost
immediately. I also found that my timing light no longer works, so I
need to get another one to set the timing a bit more accurately than
the "ear" method.
More updates as they occur ---
