A pencil eraser sometimes helps, too. It's only mildly abrasive, so 
it'll remove tarnish but not plating. I've often used this trick for 
cleaning dirty gold- and silver-plated contacts on computer gear.  If 
you can find an "ink eraser," they work even better. They're like a 
pencil eraser but a bit harder and grittier.  (Oddly, they don't seem to 
work for erasing ink. They invariably just tear through the paper.)
