That is because it was not the Fairmont. It was the Ford Granada and Mercury Monarch that tried to compare their
size and shape to a Mercedes. I had a 1977 Monarch and it was no comparison. Lousy handling for one thing.

Hmm.  Maybe I'm just not squinting at it right, but this doesn't look
much like a W123 grille to me:
