G-05 is/was the actual Mercedes anti-freeze formula (not just the
specification). Mercedes and Zerex G-05 are made using the Mercedes
formula. They both meet the Mercedes specification (not surprising since
they are both made in the same plant and on the same lines using the
same formula). There are other anti-freeze makers that make anti-freeze
that meets the Mercedes specification and is thus Mercedes approved.
Until a few years ago, none of those except the Mercedes branded product
were available in the US. Since Ford and Chrysler started requiring
coolant that met the Mercedes spec, some US manufactures have started
making appropriate products that are being approved my Mercedes (and
other manufacturers). GM and some of the Japanese car makers use a
different specification and the different types should NOT be used
interchangeably. Prestone is trying to make one type that fits all - and
that doesn't cut it.
